4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Beast with some quirks
JBrzez

Bought this after most review sites highly praised it and most reviews (like this one) liked it. No matter where you look you will always find someone who isn't completely satisfied.First off, check your doorway dimensions. Even if you take the main doors off this beast it is still 30.5" deep. Older doorways might be tight to move it through. I was able to take off the freezer door tracks (8 mini-bolts/screws) and it brought it back down to 29.25". The delivery guy wouldn't do it so it sat in my living room until I figured that part out myself. It assembles pretty easily. The directions are pretty straight forward, just follow the book (but you have to follow them backwards as there are no assembly instructions only dis-assembly instructions). You can do it with 1 person but there are a few steps that make it a LOT easier with 2. The doors aren't actually set to level at the top as it was explained to me by the installer that the Left door is built about 1/8-1/4" taller to factor in sag over time since the water/ice maker/dispenser is built into that one. Makes sense but you can adjust it yourself to make them even. The overall appearance of this monster is beautiful. It is a shiny/polished stainless steel front. The side panels state that they are a slate/dark grey but to me they actually look more dark chocolate but it could be the lighting in the room. No magnets will stick on the front due to the high nickel count of this stainless steel but they do stick to the sides. The doors open and close very heavy. Gone are the days of the thin doors. They are actually pretty loud (no whisper action here) when they close but that is mainly due to the left door seal that expands/contracts as the door opens. Be warned: they will wake a sleeping baby or the family dog if you open them during a late night raid of the fridge. The interior lighting is wonderful. It 'warms' up after a second once the door(s) are opened. Not super bright until they all warm up. Most other fridges in this class seem to only have overhead or back lighting which makes a lot of the food shadowed and dark. Not this baby. Theater lighting all the way around provides a clear view of everything inside. The door shevles are a little different. They don't quite fit 'American' food. I wonder if that falls under the European influence. The one flip up door shelf would be perfect for a dozen eggs, if they only came in 10 instead of 12, deep enough but not wide enough for the carton. Some of the others on the Left door are considerably smaller due to the ice maker so they get to catch nic-naks (perfect for mini-wine bottles). You will need to re-adust them a few times until you can find the best configuration for your usage. The interior shelves are very deep. Upgrading from a 18cu. ft. model to this model makes it look like I don't have any food in the fridge. The shelves are adjustable. The right rear top shelf items seemed to be a little colder than the rest of the items in the fridge so be warned. The interior drawers are spacious BUT you have to have both doors open to access them. Kind of a bummer. But they are deep and hold a lot of items are are lit too. The full width Deli drawer is nice for storage of just about anything. All come with separate temp controls too.The Freezer drawer is deep and split into 2 side via a plastic tube. I see forgetting about certain items in the bottom after awhile. The 2 pull-out drawers work perfect for often accessed items (smaller one on the left holds 2 loaves of bread (or extra ice) & the larger right drawer is perfect for ice cream and other frozen treats). The little tip-out shelf on the backside of the freezer drawer is nice for frozen cans of juice. The water/ice cube dispenser is a nice feature even if the ice cubes do come out at weird angles (make sure to keep your container (glass) right up against the dispenser or you will be cleaning up ice cubes off the floor). The autofill works awesome of small containers. I put an empty Gatoraid bottle under it and did the Autofill and it stop about 1/8" from the bottle neck. Perfect. The water does fill kind of slow (personal opinion) but better than splashing all over coming out too forcefully. No matter if you use the Autofill or just manually fill it tells you on the screen how many ounces you have dispensed which is kind of cool. Having the water filter accessible but still hidden in the door itself is a nice option too. It comes with a by-pass plug too incase after you find out how much the filters cost to replace you choose to no longer filter your water. You can upload images to the LCD screen thru the USB port (no mention of it or how to use it in the manual) located in the top left corner of the water/ice dispenser. You can load up to 99 images (depending on the image sizes). Your images have to be in the home directory (no folders or sub-folders) of the device you are pluging in to it. It will automatically copy the images to the mini-hard drive for the screen. It will cycle them as a slideshow in the order that you uploaded them in, no random feature, anytime you use the water/ice dispenser. Some reviewers have 'mentioned' (code for complained) about the noise it makes. The compressers are high efficient so they run more often than some older models. I used a Sound Meter app on my phone and they peaked between 42-48dB. Not that loud but you will hear it. If it is in an open area the sound will travel to the next room. It will take some getting used to but being more efficient comes at a price. It is quiet but not silent. Older models ran louder but turned on/off more often. The newer ones run longer but use a lot less power. But the sound is something to consider with this model. The door handles are quite thick and show fingerprints very easily. The shipping shrinkwrap is kind of tough to remove, especially since I think they put it on before some of the door handle hardware so it leaves little flakes at the joints, tweezer-worthy to remove them. We actually left it on the pull out tray under the water/ice dispenser. It is a cool looking blue and anything to draw attention to it adds to the look of it.The water hookup is pretty easy along with the power plug (if standing in front of the fridge the water hookup is on the left and the power plug on the right). It does roll forward and back pretty easily for a fridge of this weight but not side-to-side as the wheels don't pivot. This beast is a prime example of fashion and function. It can handle anything you put in it and look beautiful in any kitchen.I call it a beast as this was a huge upgrade for our house (18 cu.ft. 1995 model to this 28.6 cu.ft. monster). Read more ›

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic refrigerator!

I finally gave in and decided to replace the "came with the home" GE side by side that was still chugging away since 1998. Wow! That GE was turn of the century and the ice maker and water dispenser still worked. There was no question that only brand that could replace that GE was another GE.Going from a side by side to a french door is unbelievable! I love the space in this refrigerator! Even though the ice maker is in the door, there are still three shelves (albeit two of them are rather narrow) placed there to still maximize the space. This refrigerator was thoughtfully designed and is easily configured to accommodate just about any sized container or item. The multiple shelves are easily raised or lowered. One shelf can retract part way to allow for extremely oversized or very tall items to fit. There are two ample drawers for either veg or fruit. I also like the temperature controlled drawer that can be used for a variety of items. The controls on this refrigerator are operated through a few buttons and touch screen interaction. I found the menus rather easy to navigate and it didn't take too much digging to get to key features that need adjusting. I love the fact that I can place a water bottle, press an auto fill and walk away. The screen will even display the amount of water dispensed into a container in ml, oz. or cups. There is also a precise fill feature that will let you select an exact amount of water to be dispensed. This is a great feature for baking/recipes!After the refrigerator was installed, I enabled the turbo cool for both the refrigerator and the freezer. A few hours later, the temps were dropping and everything was getting well cooled. The unit is incredibly quiet and I can honestly say that I love this refrigerator. I am so impressed that I'm writing a review for it! I don't know why I waited so long to replace the old one, but I'm thrilled with this new GE. The quality and thoughtful design are fantastic! I can't recommend this unit highly enough! Read more ›

I don't understand how somebody can write a review and give this refrigerator one star and all they keep talking about is their 4 year old refrigerator and how much is sucks. obviously this refrigerator wasn't even produce back then. Its not even the same model as the one that your rating so badly you moron.

I love this fridge. It is a very large unit. The only downfall is that it lacks ice productivity. I just keep a bag of ice on the freezer. I've had this unit for almost 8 months now. Ran into this review page because I'm trying to buy a water filter for it as the touch screen display is showing a replacement is required

The GE PFE29PSDSS is awesome. It looks great and being 28.6 Cu. Ft has plenty of space. I had to remove the doors to get it into my Kitchen. It was easier than I thought it would be with the detailed instructions that came with the Fridge. After plugging it in, it took less than 4 hours and it was cold. This fridge is quieter than my 10 year old LG fridge. I like the shiny stainless steel finish and the dark gray sides. If you are looking for a top of the line refrigerator this is it.

Had to "re-work" my cabinets to get it to fit, but the food storage is off the chart! The lighting (yes, fridge lighting) make me want to cook better food to see how it looks stored in this LED lit food display case (the fridge). Touch screen controls and auto-fill feature work like magic.

5 out of 5 stars old like me!

The post that are about other GE refrigerators almost drove me away from the PFE29PSDSS Profile 28.6 Cu.(out in 2013 with auto fill)! When I read about motherboards going bad I thought it was with this refrigerator, I was horrified! The reviews were for older model GE refrigerators put on this site. I have a 24 inch kitchen aid oven that went bad when you used the self cleaning and you guessed it,I used it after the warranty was up and it burned up the motherboard. The difference between GE and Kitchen Aid was GE was replacing the motherboards (no recall) if you contacted them!Kitchen Aid would do nothing even after contacting them and millions of post on the internet.GE must care about the customer from reading about people who had older models that got fixed. The post that are not about this refrigerator should be removed!Bye the way the new GE refrigerator factory in the USA could make this refrigerator even better.Ultimate test of auto fill, hockey water bottle filled to top and then it stopped!WOW!
