4 out of 5 stars Yes, an ice maker problem

Yes, there is a ice maker problem, and LG knows about it and has engineered a fix. The computer that controls the defrost cycle does not defrost long enough, so ice builds up on the inside wall, causing the fan that forces cold air into the ice maker compartment to make noise and, I suppose if it gets bad enough, stop moving altogether. I know this because this is what I was told when I had service performed by a local company who contracts with LG to do warranty service. The service guy replaced the gasket around the freezer door and the computer "motherboard" in the rear. An additional fix to the ice maker is forthcoming when parts come in that is supposed to increase ice production. This is a great frig aside from these problems, but at least LG stepped up and is getting them fixed for me without hesitation.

Like most I did an exhaustive search before settling on this fridge. Let's be honest my wife had the most input. Our choices came down between this one, the GE profile and the Kitchen aid one in the same general price range. (The Samsung was out of the running right off the bat since my wife absolutely hated the ice maker taking up so much space inside.) Between the last three standing and even the Samsung the reviews seemed to be consistent in their negativity. Each one seemed to have a flaw that would crop up in the near future from poorly constructed ice makers to bad electronics to compressors that would crap out just after warranty each fridge seemed to be doomed from the start. So I decided they seemed to all be garbage and I would make sure to include an extended warranty into the price of whatever I purchased. I decided therefore to not review this refrigerator based upon a problem I have yet to encounter but upon my feelings having used it for a week now. (The kitchen aid dropped out of the running because the in door ice maker and water dispenser seemed too small to fit a large glass into. The GE has a great water dispenser however the interior is smaller and my wife disliked the freezer layout with the deep two level bins and the upper bins seemed like they didn't glide as nice as the LG. Also the freezer door on the GE seemed stiffer to open since the LG has that handle that breaks the seal first. Also the LG has an air filter and the lighting in the LG is better.)The LG has a very spacious interior. Once it had cooled for a few hours we transferred our food from the garage fridge into the house. What had been a full fridge easily fit into the new one with room to spare. We like the build quality of the gliding interior drawers as they move in and out very smoothly.Read more ›

We have had this frig for 1 year and three months and here are the problems we have had.Electronic control panel completely stopped working for about a day.Ice maker jams up all the time.Three of the five side door pockets are broken. Today I open the frig and the condiments fell out from the side door storage and all the glass condiment bottles broke. Also if you are not at least 5' 5" you will not be able to reach to the back of the top shelves. This is the worst frig I have ever owned.I have not called them yet, however we have read on the web that they know they have a control panel problem and while a good organization would do a recall or at least offer to fix it out of warranty, LG will not.I really regret this purchase. If LG does anything positive in response to the call I will make soon, I will update my post.Update 12/14/12I changed my review from one to three stars because I called LG and received some results. I told the initial rep about my broken bin and dividers and he just wanted to give me the number for parts. I told him I should not have to pay for these as I have had five thing go wrong on this frig in less then 16 months. When I asked to be transferred to a supervisor he did and after explaining my frustration to the supervisor, he agreed to send out a new side storage bin and dividers. They came within four days. One of the parts was wrong but I know they tried and most of my storage bin problems are solved. I do give them credit for doing this and doing it quickly.

1 out of 5 stars Great Capacity, If It Worked!

I bought this fridge in May 2011 when it had just entered the market and was only available at HH Gregg. I was so excited by the capacity since my family of 5 eats and I cook A LOT! It was so pretty, shiny, and new while not taking up any more space than the 24 cu ft it replaced. In the 1st month it started making a lot of noise. Serviceman replaced the seal and reset the freezer door on the track. As soon as he left, food in freezer was covered in snow and again the noise. Serviceman replaced the board and fan motor. 2 weeks later, yep, the noise! After 5 service calls for the same thing, LG said I was out of warranty since it was a year old. Made a one-time courtesy to fix it, serviceman came out Nov 2012 with some new board that was the fix for my issue. Yep, you guessed it, right in the middle of Thanksgiving dinner...THE NOISE!!! It sounded like a jackhammer! I'm so beyond angry at this time, I will not be buying another LG fridge again. You can find better ways to spend $3K than this fridge, trust me!
