5 out of 5 stars A super little workhorse
Kristine Lofgren

I admit it, I thought all min-fridges were the same. Tiny little compartment, noisy rattle, ugly as sin. But somehow Whynter has managed to buck the trends. First of all, this fridge has two doors - that is pretty great, since most mini-fridges I've encountered have a single door with a second door for the freezer. It does take up a little more room, but it also makes this fridge better looking and provides better freezing capacity and better temperature control. To add to the clever appearance, the outside is a glossy, clean black but Whynter includes a neon-blue dry erase marker so you can take your fridge from average to fun with drawings or just use your fridge as fun little memo-board.Inside, the fridge compartment is cleverly laid out. There is a single glass shelf for food (which is a little difficult to see if the fridge is on the ground, since the freezer compartment extends above it) and a small little drawer compartment with glass shelf on top. That means there are two shelves with one drawer, essentially. The clever part is in the door, where there is a can rack that can hold about 9 cans and actually has access in two different areas, meaning that you can have two different soda/juice/beer flavors accessible at all times (rather than just stacking the cans up so that you can access the bottom flavor). It saves a ton of room - that many cans would take up an entire shelf. Then there is another rack that can hold a small milk carton or 2 liter bottle. The two door racks cover a range of liquid containers, which essentially leaves the shelves and drawers all for your food. Nice! The freezer compartment is pretty roomy. I've packed a few boxes of treats in there or a 3 pound chicken and 2 bags of frozen veggies. Certainly enough for a small office, dorm or mother-in-law apartment. The fridge comes with a mini-ice cube tray (seriously, the ice cubes are tiny - so cute!) and an ice scraper. The fridge has 6 temperature settings and it seems to maintain the temperature at which it is set quite nicely, and though it does make noise, it isn't nearly as loud as some mini fridges I have heard.Overall, a fun, clean-looking appliance that also very cleverly designed. 5 out of 5 stars Nice little upgrade to standard dorm fridge
Ashley Mott

My husband and I have used a small (dorm size) refrigerator for the past several years that featured a built-in freezer above the top shelf, so this unit was a major upgrade because the freezer is entirely separate. This not only frees up space in the bottom of the unit but also provides you with a larger, more efficient freezer. This unit stands up nicely next to a counter but isn't likely to meet up perfectly flush with most but isn't ideal for underneath storage because of air circulation needs.I think the built-in (on) dry erase marker board is a neat touch, and when we spread this unit out a bit more in a larger kitchen, I plan on using it for shopping lists or whimsical notations.

4 out of 5 stars Cool Space-saving Refrigerator Freezer with Dry Erasable Writing Surface

This is a wonderful compact double-door refrigerator. Its small size makes it perfect for a dorm room or for an additional source of cold storage or for anywhere that space may be limited. It stands 33 ½" tall with the door hinge cover taken into consideration. It has an estimated yearly electricity use of 270kWh, and includes a one year limited warranty for the original owner within the forty-eight continental states. The included accessories consist of a dry erase pen with eraser on the cap, a baby ice cube tray, and a frost scraping tool. This refrigerator features a roomy rectangular freezer compartment with no component shape obstructions. The interior dimensions are about fourteen inches wide by seven and a half inches high by twelve inches of depth while leaving clearance for the door's interior molding. The refrigerator compartment features a door rack that can conveniently hold six to seven twelve-ounce beverage cans. The door offers storage space, with a low, swinging security bar for upright bottles and cartons and there is a small butter holding panel with a fixed security bar.The interior refrigerator box consists of two easily removable glass shelves for storage. The upper shelf shares its space with the thermostat, and provides clearance for items up to seven and a half inches in height. The top drawer extends nine inches outward from the rear. The lower shelf, with a moisture drain toward the rear, and glass portion covering the crisper drawer, has a fully open space, provides clearance for items four inches in height, and ends eleven and a half inches outward from the rear, leaving two and a half inches toward the front for things taller than the shelf above. The crisper drawer is somewhat sufficient but limited with interior dimensions of six and an eighth inches deep by fifteen inches wide by six and a half inches high, but its interior width is interrupted by the form of the handle at the middle. The write-on surface is a great bonus feature. The included neon blue dry erase pen has a broad, square cotton eraser that wipes easily. The surface can be written on safely with any dry erase pen; the included color, although clearly visible, does not stand out more than necessary on the black surface, which I consider a good thing. The cap on the dry erase pen has a flat surface onto which a square of Velcro can be stuck, and it would have been really "cool" had this been included, unfortunately it was not.I am quite happy with the performance of this Whynter compact double door refrigerator freezer. I much prefer the double door configuration over those combo units whose freezer is shared in the same space as the refrigerator. I like to use full size ice trays instead of the baby ice cube tray included, which makes a dozen cubes that would barely keep a single beverage cool - the included tray would be great for freezing butter and herb blocks, though.I recommend this compact refrigerator for its good storage space to footprint ratio. It seems to be a well-made, decent quality unit. I did not know what to expect from a manufacturer with "why" in its name, since I typically look at things sarcastically, perhaps it is the name of the town in which the company is based. I do like this little unit, and it works wonderfully. I see no reason why not to give this functional little write-on fridge a run. Read more ›

3 out of 5 stars It's OK.
John H. Gruver

This is listed as an Energy Star appliance. It definitely is on the low side of comparables' energy usage according to the attached card. The space inside is nice, for this sized unit. There are all sorts of amenities such as door cargo holders, produce/meat drawer, etc. Using the suggested start setting of 3, it had a temperature of 38°F on the middle glass shelf after the recommended 24-hour cooling period. I turned it up to 4 and after 24-hours it's reading 36°F. My regular fridge is set to 33°F. This little guy is OK for liquid drinks (wine/beer/sodas/water) and perhaps eft overs for 24-hours or so, but I wouldn't store milk/creme/meat - perishable items - in it for more than a day or two. So far, the freezer isn't freezing. I bet I'd need to turn the dial to >5 to get actual freezing accomplished.Plusses: compact, very light weight, nice layout of interior accouterment, easy to level, low energy consumption (for a fridge its size).Minuses: freezer doesn't, need to use higher-than-recommended setting to get a safe cooling temperature, very noisy(!) compressor.I do not actually have a need for a little fridge, but if you do check this one out. Like any other appliance, you should go to a couple brick&mortars to give com parables a try.
